Good Luck and Refreshments
Good luck tomorrow everyone.
You may be thirsty or hungry en route and if any of you fancy stopping off or refreshments here are a few pointers:
Saturday
Lorton: there's a little shop in the village just before the first big climb (Whinlatter). There's also Winder Hall, where you can get a cuppa and a tasty food fix (in splendid surroundings).
At the top of Whinlatter there's the visitor centre.
Keswick: lots of choice here.
Greystoke (mile-marker 46) is a pleasant place to stop off, six miles short of Penrith and about 24 miles from Alston. We thoroughly recommend Annie's Cycle Cafe and the Boot and Shoe pub.
At the top of Hartside is the famous cafe with its breathtaking views.
Sunday
Nenthead (mile-marker 80) - Miner's Arms is a favoured C2Cers watering hole, offering snacks and hot drinks.
Allenheads Inn (mile-marker 87)
Parkhead (mile-marker 99). Excellent cafe bang on the route. It's all (more or less) downhill from here!
Check out the Coast to Coast Guide for further options or www.c2c-guide.co.uk. Sustrans maps (£6.99) and Coast to Coast Cycle Routes (£9.99) will be on sale during the trip for those with a thirst for further homework.
Good luck and look forward to seeing you there. And please remember that there will be lots of other cyclists on the route. If you wear your C2C commemorative t-shirts you'll easily be able to spot fellow cyclists from our 200-strong pack.

At the End of the Ride
A couple of housekeeping points about the end of the ride.
At Alston camp you will have the choice of putting your bags into TWO vans. One is going to Newcastle, the other to Sunderland.
If you opt to send your luggage to Newcastle you will also need to end your ride in Newcastle as the driver will not be able to wait until you have cycled to Sunderland and then got all the way back to Newcastle to pick it up. It's fine by us if you do wish to end in Newcastle but purists might wish to note that Newcastle is a good 10 miles west of the briney, so strictly speaking you will have only gone C2, as the final C is in Sunderland...
Anyway, here's the schedule before the curtain comes down:
Event to finish on Marine Walk, Roker from 1pm onwards
- Photographer will be at Marine Walk from 2pm
- You will then be instructed to ride to the National Glass Centre (NGC) using the main road rather than going back the same way. This will ensure that there are no collisions with those riders coming in later. Please note the main road will be closed till around midday due to another event (the Great North 10k run) taking place in the morning.
- The reception will be held on the roof of the NGC, which can be accessed easily on either side of the entrance of the building (weather permitting; if not it will be held inside)
- Information packs and packed lunches to be handed out upon arrival at the NGC. Photographer will also be there from 3pm.
- St Peters Car park can be accessed by using the main road.
- there is a cafe / restaurant in the NGC for friends and family (information packs will include a 10% discount voucher), and free car parking is available either at St Peters OR NGC.
The Sunderland car park for those parking up for the duration of the ride, as you will know by now, is both very close and free: St Peter's Campus, University of Sunderland, SR6 0DD.

Tyne Tunnel closed 11th/ 12th July
From 05.00 hours on Saturday 11th July until 23.00 hours on Sunday 12th July the existing Tyne Tunnel will be closed to enable vital construction of the new south junction road bridges to take place.
The south junction of the New Tyne Crossing, once completed, will include a new loop road bridge, which will enable traffic from Jarrow and South Shields to access the A19 northbound, and a replacement road bridge for the existing Howard Street bridge that passes over the vehicle tunnel.
The construction of these new road bridges requires numerous large and very heavy concrete beams to be lowered into place onto the pillars.
It is not safe for traffic to pass beneath these beams while the positioning operations take place and therefore part of this work will require a full tunnel closure.
The timing of the closure is dependent on several factors including meeting the complex Project programme (delaying this element of work could severely impact progress on other aspects of the construction programme) and avoiding the period of major road works planned on the A1 from 25th July.
During this activity, Howard Street bridge in Jarrow will also be closed. Localised traffic management plans are being drawn up and agreed with South Tyneside Council.
Note that the A19 will also be closed north of Silverlink during 11th - 12th July while Castle Park bridge (B1317) is demolished by the Highways Agency.
Drivers wishing to use the Tyne Tunnel are advised to use the Tyne Bridge or A1 motorway during the closure.
From 23.00hours on Sunday 12th July normal operations will return at the Tyne Tunnel and it will be business as usual.
Further information will shortly be available at www.newtynecrossing.info or contact the 24 helpline on 0191 262 4451 .
